Needs some space. Posted Oct. 20, 2024, 12:25 a.m. Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games has said Squadron 42 launches at some point in 2026.If the game does indeed launch then, it'll come out an incredible 14 years after CIG first launched Star Citizen's crowdfunding drive.During CitizenCon in Manchester, England this evening, CIG boss Chris Roberts, known for creating the Wing Commander series, took to the stage to say Squadron 42 will offer 30-40 hours of gameplay, and that he was "confident" that Star Citizen’s long-awaited standalone single-player story game would release in 2026.Roberts’ on-stage comments followed a lengthy live gameplay demo that suffered a number of crashes, bugs, and graphical problems, but did give the audience a good idea of Squadron 42’s first hour.CIG demoed Squadron 42’s prologue, which is designed to set the stage for the player as a pilot in the sci-fi game. Squadron 42 latest update: Novem Feel insignificant, which, in the face of looming defeat from an enormous alien fleet, you pretty much are. Gameplay is largely an extended cutscene broken up with turret shooting sections, but it works. The camera pans from your turret to the control room where Captain MacLaren commands her ship, and as the story develops, the camera pans back to your turret. It’s smooth, cinematic, and acts as a pretty good introduction. The battle rages on with some spectacular set pieces and high stakes. In terms of visual fidelity, the game looks way above average. There are a few visual glitches here and there - Gary Oldman’s hair decides to leap around mid-cutscene, for example - but this only proves to me that what we’re watching is actual gameplay. I can’t believe that Squadron 42 looks this good. And therein lies the problem. I can’t actually believe that Squadron 42 looks this good. My gamer cynicism is too strong, and that’s a healthy way to be when it comes to games like Star Citizen. I don’t want to say that the developers are squeezing as much money as possible from their fans, because that’s (probably) not true. Star Citizen isn’t a scam, not exactly, but rather a game that will likely be updated forever because the goalposts for finishing it keep moving. Will it ever actually be released? At this point, I doubt it. Squadron 42 feels much the same to me: a project started with good intentions that has just got way out of hand. I jumped into the new gameplay video for Star Citizen: Squadron 42 with curiosity and cynicism. An hour-long look at a game that has been delayed multiple times, despite developer Cloud Imperium stating it was basically finished in 2023 and just needed some last-minute polish? The standalone companion to Star Citizen, a game that hovers in some sort of limbo between early access, beta, and alpha? A largely fan-funded project featuring famous actors like Henry Cavill, Gillian Anderson, Gary Oldman, and Mark Hamill? I’m a bit lost and confused. I swear this game already came out, like, four years ago. Apparently not. It’s still in development. Still. The whole story feels like a fever dream, with this gameplay overview the culmination of a bad trip: an elaborate marketing stunt for future investors, both public and private - and yes, I’m looking at you, backer 747, $10,000 deep into Star Citizen with a handful of snazzy ships to show for it. Related Star Citizen Is Going To Be Just Like Starfield – Mediocre At Best Big budgets and long development times don’t make a good game, unfortunately Star Citizen has been largely funded by its players, and it’s likely a good portion of the $700 million raised has gone towards Squadron 42. Squadron 42 will apparently be released in 2026, three years after devs called it “feature complete.” Understandably, this all throws up plenty of red flags, and yet… I was not expecting to watch the full hour of gameplay, but wow, it looks absolutely incredible. I felt more emotion during the battle scene between the United Empire Of Earth (UEE) and the invading lizard-like Vanduul, than I did during any of the recent Star Wars films, despite knowing nothing about anyone involved. The story follows Admiral Bishop (Gary Oldman), with his second-in-command, Captain Thomas Wade (Mark Strong) as they command the UEE fleet from their flagship. Your role as a player in the story takes the form of a regular gunner in the navy, aboard a ship commanded by Captain MacLaren (Gillian Anderson). Henry Cavill is in there somewhere, too, as a pilot of the famous Squadron 42 - an elite group of fighter pilots. Don’t worry, if you’re dizzy from all the names, it gets even more full-on when you see the cast list. Mark Hamill, Liam Cunningham, John Rhys-Davies, Andy Serkis, Sophie Wu, and Gemma Whelan, to name just a few, make up an absolutely star-studded cast. And who would’ve guessed: it works. Gary Oldman’s speech as Admiral Bishop as the Vanduul fleet bears down on them is fantastic: I’m instantly hooked even though I have no idea what’s going on. A rousing theme - a combination of bagpipes and horns - sounds like the theme of humanity. The huge spaceships look the part, which makes sense. Cloud Imperium Games, the developer of Star Citizen, have been pumping out new ships and concepts for ships since at least 2011. Gameplay does a great job of making your character

Description The Constellation Andromeda was designed by manufacturer Robert Space Industries to be a modular, multi-function, multi-crew tower in the stars -- a scrappy warrior freighter equipped for long-range voyages. From above, it looks like a broadsword awaiting the steady hands of its knight. The Andromeda's three-person cockpit juts out like a bulldog's jaw in front of the four Hammer Propulsion engines, and its strategically-placed vertical takeoff and landing fans give it an sharp maneuverability advantage in atmosphere over many other large craft. From a distance, the Andromeda looks like one smooth piece, a lithe sea mammal -- but up close, it's clear where the expertly-designed seams and bevels hold the ship and its optional add-on modules together. This high-powered command vessel's alternating light and dark greys camouflage well in the depths of space, allowing it to explode out of nowhere like a deadly surprise. Covering the aiming point.“Almost the entire concentration lies within a 1000ft circle over the MPI. Meagre to moderate tracking AA fire on the bomb run which was extremely accurate resulted in minor damage to 13 aircraft and major damage to four in the group. The high and lead squadrons each lost one aircraft in the target area from flak damage.”The aircraft lost from the lead squadron, the 401st, was B-17G-50-B0 42-102504 Times A-Wastin’, flown by Lt Peter Pastras. Its demise was witnessed by Lt Mike Fodroci, a navigator aboard another B-17. He saw the four gun batteries on the ground tracking bursts of flak through the lead formation, getting closer and closer to Times A-Wastin’ until the fourth one went directly into the aircraft’s still-open bomb bay.In his report he states: “The pilot must have been killed instantly; for the ship pulled up and veered to the right, climbing directly over our ship. Captain Shelby put our ship into a dive so steep that I was thrown up against the astro hatch of the ceiling in the nose — seems I hung there for a brief second or two.“I also observed that a bad fire was burning on the aircraft’s forward bomb bay area and that the co-pilot was trying to climb out of the small window with his back pack on. Somehow, we saw three chutes emerge from #504 as she spun toward the earth.”Times A-Wastin’s co-pilot, Bob Morris, was killed when the B-17 exploded in mid-air, along with all but two of its crew, engineer Lyle Jones and radio operator Bob A Smith, who were taken prisoner on the ground. The aircraft lost from the high squadron was 42-31333 ‘Wee Willie’.In the Missing Air Crew Report S/Sgt George Little, a gunner aboard a 401st B-17, states: “I observed 42-31333
