The Keenan Revue is just around the corner. I remember the first time I went last year. It was the Saturday show, and I stood outside in line about 20 minutes before the doors opened. For those who are not familiar with this famous event, it is a very fun and vulgar event filled with jokes specific to Notre Dame. I couldn’t believe the things they could talk about without heavy censorship. Today I will talk about something I noticed about the general student body. For those who do not know or have forgotten, last school year, some time in November 2023, there was a drag show hosted on campus at DPAC, and the backlash the show received was immense. There were many protesters concerned about the desecration of the University’s Catholic values. When I attended the Keenan Revue last year, I noticed that some acts used cross-dressing. Which got me thinking — there seems to be a double standard on who gets to get away with certain performances. When there’s a drag show, many criticized the cross-dressing, but when the Keenan Revue did it, I didn’t see any widespread backlash. So, why is this the case? Why does a hall get a free pass for cross-dressing while an event sponsored by the school does not from the student body? I’m not condemning either event. I just want to know why this hypocrisy is present. What did the event at DPAC lack that Keenan Hall had to receive support and approval from the general student body? All I will say is that people need to be more reflective. If you are going to criticize something, just be consistent when the ‘problem’ shows up, regardless of the circumstances.
