Google Chrome has a built-in tool that limits the number of ads you see while browsing the Web. Like most ad blockers, Chrome’s service improves your experience by reducing unwanted pop-ups, and stopping noisy autoplay videos. And you can turn Chrome’s ad blocker on or off at any time. But note that this tool isn’t so much an ad blocker as an ad limiter. Many ads will still get through, even with Google’s tool turned on—ads that are both annoying and privacy-invading.If you’re looking for better privacy and a better overall experience, you should instead consider a third-party extension like AdBlock Plus, or a privacy browser with built-in ad blocking, like Brave. Before we explain how to enable and disable ad blocker on Chrome, let’s first examine how Chrome’s ad blocker works, and what it can and can’t do.Chrome’s built-in ad blocker (or limiter) is set to keep ads within a specific range of acceptability, using something called the Better Ads Guideline. Ads that are especially intrusive or annoying are blocked; others ads will still appear on the pages you view. Why does Google take this approach? Because Google is, first and foremost, an advertising company. Ads are how they make much of their revenue. Google doesn’t block YouTube ads, for example, because YouTube is part of Google, and both sites profit from those ads.Knowing Chrome’s built-in blocker has these limitations, most people instead turn to separate browser extensions. These add-ons use available ad scripts to block webpage requests to load Cartoon characters in violent or sexual circumstances, as well as videos advocating self-harm, weight loss and other inappropriate content have appeared on YouTube Kids. While this type of content is more common on regular YouTube, some of it has been known to filter through to YouTube Kids with the use of tags to fool the algorithm YouTube uses to categorize content. To combat this issue, YouTube has added human monitors to its filtering process, whose job is to review flagged videos, as well as to actively seek out inappropriate content. These monitors don’t review all content that makes its way onto YouTube Kids, but the platform does allow users to flag inappropriate content for review if they do find it. YouTube has also instigated a policy of immediately age-restricting videos which are flagged on the main app, effectively restricting them from YouTube Kids. The autoplay feature on YouTube Kids has also come under fire from parents and lawmakers, who argue the feature encourages rabbit-hole style viewing—and also has the potential to serve up the aforementioned inappropriate content. In response to this criticism, YouTube kids introduced the ability for parents to turn off autoplay in settings. According to Google’s Youtube Kids Parental Guide, the autoplay feature is now turned off by default in YouTube Kids. Finally, ads and branded content are extremely prominent on YouTube Kids. Parents can choose to subscribe to YouTube Premium, which eliminates ads, though this is a paid service, and does not prevent branded content posted by companies’ official accounts from appearing on the app.How can parents make YouTube Kids safer? As with anything, communication and engagement are key. Talk to your kids and take an interest in their YouTube viewing habits. Where possible, discourage headphone use, so you can keep an ear on what kind of content your kid is

YouTube revamps mid-roll ads to target natural breaks, offering hybrid placement options that reduce viewer disruptions. YouTube revealed plans to update how mid-roll advertisements function, starting May 12.The update focuses on showing more ads at natural breakpoints in videos while reducing interruptive ad placements that can lead to viewer abandonment.Key Changes to Mid-Roll Ad PlacementYouTube will prioritize placing mid-roll ads at natural break points, such as scene transitions or pauses in content, rather than during action sequences or in the middle of sentences. For older videos uploaded before February 24, YouTube will automatically add ad slots at natural break points for creators who have previously used manual mid-roll placements.Importantly, creators can opt out of this automatic placement through YouTube Studio if they prefer to maintain manual control.New Creator Tools Being Rolled OutTo help creators adapt to these changes, YouTube is introducing two new features:Feedback in YouTube Studio: This tool will identify if manually placed mid-roll ad slots are considered “interruptive,” allowing creators to adjust their placements accordingly.Automatic Ad Slots: Creators can now simultaneously enable manual and automatic mid-roll placements. This hybrid approach lets creators control specific ad breaks while YouTube’s system identifies additional natural break opportunities.Thomas Kim (“TK”), who heads the YouTube Partner Program, explained in a video:“Creators in the past had to choose between automatic or manual mid-rolls, and now we’re going to give you the option to do both.”Impact on Different Creator StrategiesThe changes will affect creators differently based on their current mid-roll strategies:Creators using only automatic mid-rolls: No action is needed; these channels won’t be affected.Creators manually placing mid-rolls at natural breaks: These channels should be minimally impacted, but they are encouraged to use the new feedback tool to verify their placements.Creators placing mid-rolls at fixed intervals without considering content flow: These channels may see decreased revenue if they don’t adapt their strategies, as YouTube will show fewer ads at interruptive points.Potential Revenue BenefitsYouTube reports positive revenue results from early testing.Channels enabling automatic mid-roll ads and manual placements saw an average 5% increase in YouTube ad revenue compared to those using manual mid-rolls.TK stated in the announcement video:“By adding auto on top [of manual placements], it lets our systems find potentially better breaks and increases your ad opportunity.”What Creators Should Do NowWith the changes taking effect on May 12, YouTube is giving creators approximately 2.5 months to adjust their strategies. The company recommends:Check existing manual mid-roll placements with the new feedback toolConsidering enabling automatic ad slots alongside manual placementsCreating content with more natural breakpoints if current videos have limited non-interruptive placement opportunitiesYouTube reminds creators that they control whether to show mid-roll ads and where they appear. The company doesn’t force automatic mid-rolls on videos that don’t have them enabled.TK assured creators“We’re not taking away any controls. You have control whether you want to turn on mid-roll ads, turn off mid-roll ads, where you want to place them. All we’re giving you is more features to help you optimize those and give you more options.”For more details, see the

How to turn off youtube ads

I've been using them on Mavericks and they worked fine, they get rid of the standard Flash player on Youtube and use HTML5, without ads and useless controls. Also, they allow you to download the video for example. Now on Yosemite if they're active not only I don't get the HTML5 player, I can't watch the video at all! The native Flash Youtube player won't load at all, as if I had no flash player installed, and it gives me that red box with the sad face and tells me to download it. If I turn them off in the extensions panel, then videos work again with the standard Youtube Flash player. It's almost as though not only they're incompatible with Yosemite, not doing their work, but if they're turned on they mess with the Flash Player that I do have and that does work otherwise. So I need to keep them OFF, and use the ugly native player...Anyone else experiencing this? I've checked but there's no updates available in the extensions panel. Since I've downloaded them through the Apple Safari extensions page, one would think that they would update them for Yosemite? I don't know...
